Barranco de Las Ovejas Cottage Village
Barranco de las Ovejas Cottage Village is located at a height of 1,200 meters, very close to the recreational area Refugio del Pilar, at the beginning of the Volcanos Route. It is a group of about 78 constructions dry stone deep walls leaning on the rocks and roughness of the ground. The plants and dimensions are very different when getting adapted to the irregularities in the area. The town has been occupied since pre-hispanic times and it seems it was inhabited due to the exploitation of common fern to prepare roasted maize meal (gofio) and rolls, both for human and pigs' consumption. The tasks of conservation, protection and use have been possible thanks to a cooperation project among the Department of Culture, Education and Historical Heritage of the Island Council of La Palma and La Palma's Association for Rural Development (ADER).
