Reserva Biosfera La Palma

La Palma Northern Peaks and Cliffs

The main feature of this SPA is the great variety of environments from the coast to the summit. Both its vegetation and landscape are very diverse, offering suitable conditions for bird communities. In the coastal areas, different species of sea birds may be permanently observed, such as Scopoli´s shearwater (Calonectris diomedea), Bulwer’s petrel (Bulweria bulwerii), Barolo shearwater (Puffinus (assimilis) baroli), common tern (Sterna hirundo) and yellow legged seagull (Larus michahellis); some predatory birds  are also distributed in the island internal zones, such as the Barbary falcon (Falco pelegrinoides) or the common buzzard (Buteo buteo insularum). In monteverde (laurel, heath and fire tree forest) areas, endemic pigeons such as Bolle´s pigeon (Columba bollii) and laurel pigeon (Columba junoniae) are of special interest.
